Professors, instead of students, will commute to college in a new program that offers people a chance to earn a four-year degree in teaching for less than $30,000 without leaving Hazleton.
Presidents of Luzerne County Community College and Commonwealth University of Pennsylvania unveiled the program on Thursday with leaders of Hazleton Area School District, where graduates can teach.
“Retain them, train them,” Jeffrey Kubitz, a Hazleton Area School Board member, said after a news conference at LCCC’s Hazleton Center, which will be the home of the program.
Starting in the fall, students can enter the program through which they will earn associate’s degrees during their first two years from LCCC and then complete their bachelor’s degrees through classes taught during years three and four by visiting instructors from Commonwealth University created by the merger of state universities at Bloomsburg, Lock Haven and Mansfield.
